Why DNA and Pen hip Test?
I hope this answers that question and why I feel so strongly about my breeding program.
Following the tragic loss of my youthful Groodle, Spencer 4 years ago I resolved to breed superior-quality, DNA-tested and Penhip-scored Groodles. Initially, I was under the impression that I had conducted exhaustive research via Google, Facebook and breeder websites to locate a reputable breeder. However, I subsequently realized my oversight in not grasping the significance of DNA testing and Penhip scores. This experience has been invaluable, as I now endeavor to provide peace of mind to both myself and the families who acquire my puppies.
Are Groodles Hypoallergenic?
While no dog is truly hypoallergenic, Groodles tend to be low-shedding, making them a great option for many allergy sufferers. Coat types vary, so we recommend spending time with a Groodle if allergies are a concern.
What size Groodle do you breed?
Groodle sizes vary depending on the parent’s size. We currently breed standard and mini sized Groodles
What are Groodle coats like?
Groodles can have straight, wavy, or curly coats. The curlier the coat, the less shedding is expected. Below is a more detailed explanation.
Groodle Definitions & Genetics
Open Face
An Open Face dog is a dog without furnishings or long facial hair ( eg Golden Retriever). In the Groodle this is called an improper or incorrect coat since the long facial hair gives the iconic Groodle look.
Improper Coat
A dog that does not have facial furnishings including a beard, eyebrows and moustache. Although an open face is a condition of the breed standard for a Golden Retriever, it is considered an improper coat in the Groodle since it is linked with higher shedding and these dogs don't have the Groodle look because they don't have the teddy bear face.
Furnishings
The longer hair including the beard, eyebrows, moustache are called Furnishings. This is desirable on Groodles to give the teddy bear look.
At Groddles by Kylie we only breed dogs that will have furnishings.
Generations & Furnishings
Most Poodles are F/F and all Golden Retrievers are IC/IC
All F1 Groodles will have one copy of the Furnishing gene and one copy of the Improper Coat gene. In other words, all F1 pups will have the genotype F/IC so all F1 pups will have the teddy bear look. These pups may shed moderately and have a course wire coat known as a hair coat.
Breeding two parents with visible furnishings does not mean that their offspring will have them. An F1 x F1 breeding will result in 25% of the litter having NO copies of the Furnishings gene and therefore have an Open Face. These Groodles will likely shed like the Golden Retriever.
This is why we never breed this combination at Groodles by Kylie
F1b's have a 50% chance of having one copy (F/IC) and 50% chance of having 2 copies (F/F) like their Poodle parent.
My breeding program aims for the coat type in our mutitgen pups to achieve the gorgeous fleece coat and pups that are double furnished for minimal shedding.
We DNA test all of our dogs for their coat traits to ensure that all Groodles by Kylie have the gorgeous Groodle look that makes them so adorable.
A word on shedding - No Groodle is 100% non shedding.
Regular grooming is essential to prevent matting.
What coat types do you breed?
We breed parti factor standards, parti minis and solid coloured Groodles in both sizes.. I'm also hoping to add to my breeding program mini chocolate phantom and Merle colors in the future with our Molly.
Are Groodles good with kids?
Absolutely! Groodles are known for their gentle and affectionate nature, making them great companions for children. Early training and supervision are always recommended.
